Basketball (Sport Psychology Library)

THE WINNING EDGE IS MENTAL. If you've ever watched a champion make that impossible three-point shot in the game's final seconds, you know that mental skills are absolutely critical to all-around success, on and off the court.

No one understands this better than coaching legend Dale Brown and renowned sport consultant Dr. Kevin Burke, the co-authors of Sport Psychology Library: Basketball. Together, they share their expertise and techniques to bring the mental aspect of the game under every player's control. They stress preparation, practice, and performance in attaining these vital psychological skills:

CONCENTRATION
TEAMWORK
RELAXATION
CONFIDENCE
STRONG ETHICS AND FAIR PLAY

Sport Psychology Library: Basketball gives players the tools to improve their mental game plan; a way for coaches to teach successful psychology techniques; and a way for parents to be supportive and involved in a player's development.

Living Through the Hoop: High School Basketball, Race, and the American Dream

View the Table of Contents
Read the Introduction

?May?s commitment to these boys is clear, as he becomes convinced that even though their fantasies of living the American dream are for the most part a ?dirty trick,? it still remains about the best thing going in their sadly limited lives.?
Publishers Weekly

?A powerful and sober analysis of the lives of poor young people and coaches who sustain themselves with meaningful relationships and impossible dreams. May is an outstanding participant observer and interviewer who takes his reader into a social world, unpacks its meaning, and shows off the power of a vivid sociological imagination.?
—Mitchell Duneier, author of Sidewalk and Slim?s Table

?Moving and memorable, Living Through the Hoop offers an unflinching account of black male ballplayers? lives. Immersing himself in the lives of players on a high school basketball team, leading ethnographer May eloquently describes the impact of their ?hoop dreams.? May?s profound analysis shows basketball playing can often lead to success in not so flamboyant ways, as young men learn to avoid lures of mean streets, develop teamwork and fairness values, and counter omnipresent barriers of a racist society.?
—Joe R. Feagin, author of Systemic Racism

When high school basketball player LeBron James was selected as the top pick in the National Basketball Association draft of 2003, the hopes of a half-million high school basketball players soared. If LeBron could go straight from high school to the NBA, why couldn?t they? Such is the allure of basketball for so many young African American men. Unfortunately, the reality is that their chances of ever playing basketball at the professional, or even college, level are infinitesimal. In Living Through the Hoop, Reuben A. Buford May tells the absorbing story of the hopes and struggles of one high school basketball team.

With a clear passion for the game, May grabs readers with both hands and pulls them onto the hardwood, going under the hoop and inside the locker room. May spent seven seasons as an assistant coach of the Northeast High School Knights in ?Northeast,? Georgia. We meet players like Larique and Pooty Cat, hard-working and energetic young men, willing to play and practice basketball seven days a week and banking on the unlimited promise of the game. And we meet Coach Benson, their unorthodox, out-spoken, and fierce leader, who regularly coached them to winning seasons, twice going to the state tournament?s Elite Eight championships.

Beyond the wins and losses, May provides a portrait of the players? hopes and aspirations, their home lives, and the difficulties they face in living in a poor and urban area — namely, the temptations of drugs and alcohol, violence in their communities, run-ins with the police, and unstable family lives. We learn what it means to become a man when you live in places that define manhood by how tough you can be, how many women you can have, and how much money you can hustle.

May shows the powerful role that the basketball team can play in keeping these kids ?straight,? away from street-life, focused on completing high school, and possibly even attending college. Their stories, and the double-edged sword of ?hoop dreams,? is at the heart of this compelling story about young African American men?s struggle to find their way in an often grim world.

Customer Review: An Intimate Perspective

May has an uncanny ability to immerse the reader in his intimate dealings with the subsets of society he studies. As a participant/observer in this high school basketball community, May is able to both pose and answer questions that the casual reader would never be privileged to embark upon alone. The end result of this work is to share a rare perspective of the struggles faced by the specific black youth of "Northeast" high school, and of the impact of social elements in the creation and attainment of life goals by youth in general. Great book.

Covers basic techniques, clearing-out, blocking-out, outlet passing, fast-break, zone defense, progression, aggressiveness, and stamina drills. Each drill is presented with a thorough explanation and diagram.

Customer Review: The book taught me alot. I can REBOUND!

I think George Karl wrote a very exelent book on the proper way to fight for a rebound. He taught me how to position, how to time, how to stand, and how to jump for a rebound. The drills taught to me in this book helped me do all these things and much much more. My speed and agility were increased from practicing the rebounding drills. Before reeding this book I was unable to get rebounds with any regularity or consistency. Now with techniques from George Karl's book "101 Basketball Rebounding Drills" I am a constant competitor for a rebound.

From Basketball to the Beatles: In Search of Compelling Early Childhood Curriculum

[This] book does not leave us awestruck by the brilliance of a single teacher. It draws us in.
    - Eleanor Duckworth

If you're a preschool or primary teacher looking for compelling curriculum, your search has ended. According to Ben Mardell, the best ideas can be found with your students, and enthusiasm is the key ingredient. Mardell's new book describes some of the projects he created by tapping into children's interestsand the results are both instructive and galvanizing.

This entertaining and informative guide provides both the big picture about work in early childhood classroomsthe theory of teaching young childrenand the details of developing and implementing preschool curriculum. Each chapter describes a specific curriculum unit on topics ranging from squirrels to storytelling, astronomy to South Africa, and basketball to the Beatles. Each unit is followed by field-tested suggestions for exploring the topic, including art projects, movement activities, songs, group time activities, dramatic play props, stories, and field trips. There are also lists of resources at the end of each chapter to help you implement the curriculum.

Embedded within each chapter are guiding principles for curriculum development and implementation. Included are thoughts on using stories to bring topics to life, tapping children's fantasy and play to further inquiry, understanding students and guiding their activities, teaching skills as a natural part of study, building a community of learners, and much more.

Customer Review: an amazing read

I am a kingergarten teacher, and I learned so much from this book. It was amazing cover to cover. Every teacher should read this book, this man has the teaching motivation and philosphy that all teachers should have! Teach what you love, create excitement and sucess in your students. Also if you want to learn more about project approach, this is it. I love this book.

Customer Review: Beatles 101

This is an excellent book about reaching very young children by teaching what one loves.

It is only natural that the Beatle reference and title would draw the attention of many. Including the Beatles in the curriculum is a wonderful way of sharing culture; it is a form of cultural enrichment.

I know someone in the Midwest who teaches preschool students and has included a unit on the Beatles. Some of the Beatle themed projects have been to make a Yellow Submarine bulletin board; point out which pupils have Beatle haircuts; having the children identify each Beatle and learning Beatle songs. As a major Beatle fan, it is only natural that I would love this and delight in seeing Beatles 101 included in the curriculum.

And the Walls Came Tumbling Down: The Basketball Game That Changed American Sports

Customer Review: An Inspirational Read

The Walls Came Tumbling Down is the true story of a group of men who changed the face of sport. Coach Adolph Rupp defied the status quo and changed the face of basketball by drafting five black players onto the 1965-66 Texas Western Miners, and then led that team to a championship.

It's a story of the turbulent times and the social upheaval that inspired these men to take on the culture for the sake of the thing that mattered to them most-winning.

Customer Review: Talk about playing the race card for $$$$$$$$- Exploitation!

This was two groups of young men playing for their love of the game not some social agenda. Their biggest concern was basketball, chicks, food and cars and not necessarily in that order. The author is playing into the hands of todays political agenda and totally left out that the fact the Pat Riley, a very reliable and respected source, said that Lattin called him a honky during the game. That is just part of the game on both sides to get into other players'heads and that does not make Lattin a black racist and the history of the game in retrospect does not make Rupp a racist. Rupp gets vilified unfairly just as the Texas Western kids gets glorified too much. Loyola won the title with 4 blacks years earlier yet they get no respect for being instrumental in using black players because they happened to have one white player. Nobody buys that nonsense that people thought you needed one white- 4 blacks and your star is black was the real major breakthrough. Like some white roll player really made all the difference- nobody was that nieve. And what about San Francisco, and Cincinnati who's superstars were black? They were ther true pioneers. Bill Russell was the man!!
