Smooth Moves: Juking, Jamming, Hooking & Slamming Basketball’s Plays, Players, Action & Style

The game of basketball has evolved move by move, with the great players adding their signitures to every aspect of the sport. From George "The Leaning Tower of Minneapolis" Milkan's upstoppable hook shot, to Wilt "The Big Dipper" Chamberlain's ferocious slam dunk, to Michael Jordan's alley-oop, basketball has become one of the fastest, most athletic, and most crowd-pleasing sports. Smooth Moves is a full-color, fully detailed celebration of every important move on the court.

Each chapter focuses on the history of one great move (The Jump Shot, The Drive, The No-look Pass, etc.) and explores in detail the first time the move was attempted, the players who made it great, its evolution over time, and how the game has changed with its addition. Photos fill every page with examples, and sidebars relate great moments, plays and statistics. Finally, quotations from players and coaches illuminate thoughts on plays and games.

The Dean’s List: A Celebration of Tar Heel Basketball and Dean Smith

If UNC basketball is something of a religion in North Carolina--and it is--longtime coach Dean Smith is certainly its patron saint. The Dean's List, then, with the Carolina-blue trim on its nicely illustrated pages and a foreword by Michael Jordan, the greatest Tar Heel of them all, is more than just the celebration its title implies; it is an illustrated bible of a college basketball dynasty. Since Smith's anointment as head coach in 1961, the numbers have been staggering: more than 800 victories, 17 conference titles, 22 consecutive NCAA tournament bids, two national championships, 24 first-round NBA draft picks. But The Dean's List goes well beyond the numbers; it is an honest--if affectionate--history of a remarkable program, and the icon who brought innovation to the game and inspiration to his players.

Customer Review: The Dean Smith Years

The Dean's List details every year of North Carolina basketball during Dean Smith's reign as coach. You get a brief commentary from Art Chansky, alot of good pictures and a team roster. The championship year of 1982 gets special attention, which is justified as it was a special team. You're not going to find any major revelations amongst these pages, but if you are a fan of Carolina basketball, this is an enjoyable read.

Customer Review: Must have for basketball strength training

This is an excellent book for strength training. The book gives you a 12 month program that lays out the exercises and amount of weight to use every day. The amount of weight is determined by testing that is part of the program. The program is 4 different phases..offseason 1, offseason 2, pre-season, and season. My high school age son has been using the program from the book for only 5 weeks and I can already see the results.

Mr. Basketball: George Mikan, the Minneapolis Lakers, and the Birth of the NBA

The definitive biography of the first dominant big man in professional basketball, published on the sixtieth anniversary of his debut with the Minneapolis Lakers.

Before Shaquille O’Neal and before Bill Russell, there was George Mikan, a six-foot-ten, 240-pound center, whose quiet demeanor and bespectacled face belied his competitive fire. A four-time All-American at DePaul and a six-time professional champion, Mikan was such an unstoppable force—and a national sensation—that, when his Minneapolis Lakers played the New York Knickerbockers in 1949, the marquee outside Madison Square Garden read simply, “George Mikan vs. Knicks.” Drawing on extensive interviews—with former teammates, opponents, coaches, friends, and rivals—critically acclaimed author Michael Schumacher reveals, for the first time, a wonderfully nuanced portrait of one of the most unheralded athletes of our time, and a fascinating look at the birth of the National Basketball Association.

Customer Review: A Typical Book About A Long Forgotten Star

By "typical book," I mean that it covers Mikan's career in great detail, give you some early biographical info, and then zips thru this post career life in mere seconds, until coverage of his death - maybe there isn't much happening after an athlete retires but it should would be nice to see some real research every once in a while. Wait for this to come out in paperback - in fact, wait for it to come out in mass market paperback - either that or in your library's discard pile.
