The Orangemenósay the name and basketball fans everywhere immediately recognize the team from Syracuse University. For more than one hundred years, they have been playing basketball up on ìthe Hill.î Their history is one of growth and continued success, all of which is documented with rare archival photographs in The Orangemen: Syracuse University Menís Basketball. ÝÝSyracuse University fielded its first menís basketball team in 1900 and enjoyed many successes in the programís early years. Legendary players highlighted the time: Lewis Castle, the first of Syracuseís thirty-two All-Americans; Vic Hanson, the only player enshrined in both the College Football and Naismith Memorial Basketball Halls of Fame; and Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, the first African American to play at Syracuse. Longtime coach Jim Boeheim is one of just twenty-five Division I coaches with more than six hundred victories. The Orangemen: Syracuse University Menís Basketball will take fans back to Manley Field House and the days of the zoo. More recent photographs of Carrier Dome favorites such as Pearl Washington, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas, Lawrence Moten, and John Wallace will complete the picture of one of college basketballís most successful and enduring teams. Indiana is the first state that comes to mind when one thinks of high school basketball. The game itself is an important part of the history of the state. From reports of the first game in 1894 to the heyday when Hoosier high school gyms were filled beyond capacity, ìHoosierismî and basketball have had a long and eventful relationship. Towns and cities, large and small alike, all across the state, have for generations united around their high school basketball teams. ÝÝHoosier High School Basketball chronicles the long and colorful history of the players, coaches, schools, and fans that have tied the gameís history to Indiana. In a collection of over 200 vintage images, author Bob Adams details the achievements and contributions made by many of the sportís great players and coaches. ÝÝ
Customer Review: A true time capsule for hoosier basketball.
This book is a little short on words makes up for it in pictures. They say pictures are worth a thousand words and Bob Adams tells a dictionary full with timesless photos. Bob Adams tells of his endless hour discovering the crossroads of America in his search for some of the great pictures in this book. This book has many detailed photos form a yearbook collector Olin Edgell. As a youth, I often wondered who were the pioneers of escalating this great sport to the level felt at any high school basketball game. As a born Hoosier I can now appreciate Indiana basketball after reading this great book. If you enjoy basketball and have a taste for a historical capsule from yesterday, I recommend this book.
