Just for Fun: The Story of AAU Women’s Basketball
In the decades before the 1972 passage of Title IX, premier women's basketball was played by the teams in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). These teams represented companies such as Cook's Goldblume Beer and Sunoco Oilers or colleges such as Iowa Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist, and, through AAU's international teams, they gained fame abroad but were often anonymous at home. Just for Fun is the history of these all-but-forgotten players and coaches who, while playing for an exuberant love of the game, laid the groundwork for modern women's basketball.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:COACHING BASKETBALL SUCCESSFULLY by Dr.Gil Smith is a compact manual designed for both coaches and athletes. Its initial appearance is enticing and readers do not wonder if they will have time to read it and put it aside for future reading. Compiled in seventy-seven pages, Dr. Smith's book may be read during one sitting, and re-read either in its entirety or with focus on selected information without time-stress. Devoid of wordiness and verbiage, this manual is entirely reader directed.
All information is reinforced at the end of each chapter by Communication Tryouts consisting of five questions that test readers' digestion of main points. These Tryouts may be checked with the author's Answer Keys. Dr. Smith has conveyed information on five major topics: "Coaches Know This," "Basics in Communication," "Clearly Stated (Almost) Everything You Need to Know About Messages," "The Learning Process," and "The Coach as Change Agent." Patsy Neal was three-time AAU All-American and Captain of the 1964 United States team in the World Basketball Tournament. BASKETBALLS, GOLDFISH, AND WORD CHAMPIONSHIPS is autobiographical in nature, leading the reader through Neal's life, from her early childhood in the deep South, to becoming an acclaimed basketball player during the '50's and '60's, and concluding at the point where she lost her amateur status. She is former director of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, TN. The foreword is penned by Pat Summitt, Coach of the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) Lady Vols, and points out the vast growth within the sport and its long-sought acknowledgment in today's sports world. This book is chock-full of Neal's witticisms, which makes it fun to read. It also offers much historical information regarding the growth of women's basketball and the changes that have taken place. Neal reveals a fine sense of humor that will leave the reader laughing out loud at some of her statements and stories. Peppered throughout the book are lessons she has learned along the way, which are very amusing. This is a book any reader, sports fan or not, will enjoy, one that will bring forth laughter and a deeper understanding of the advent of women's sports and the remarkable women who paved the way.
