1962...What type of vehicle am I going to drive to Alaska? It wasn't an easy question to answer as I had extremely limited funds. With the classifieds in hand, I began the search for a suitable vehicle that would transport me north to Anchorage, Alaska. There was also the possibility that a wife might accompany me. I say a possibility because at that time I hadn't asked Pat Bires to be my wife.

From 1937 to 1998, eight national athletic associations have organized 493 national championship tournaments for men's and women's basketball, of which the NCAA tournament is only one. Additionally, in 1904, and then since 1938, nine other organizations have conducted 105 quasi-national championship tournaments. College Basketball's National Championships details every one of these tournaments. The tournaments are presented for each sponsoring organization by men and women, by year, and by division. All of the participating teams are listed in order of their final standing in the tournament.
Customer Review: THE definitive reference work for lover's of college b-ball
We all knew kids like Morgan Brenner back in school: you'd say, "Hey, let's make a skateboard!" and a year later a fully-restored '56 Chevy was sitting in the driveway. The genesis of College Basketball's National Championships must have been something like that: Maybe the original goal was a compilation of NCAA title tournaments or somesuch. Four years and a thousand pages later, however, what Brenner ended up putting together was a definitive compendium of every tournament ever conducted by the eight national athletic associations, with every non-association tournament thrown in for good measure. This volume is a college b-ball lover's dream. You can do your own color commentary if you have it at your elbow, as every sportscaster is sure to. Its thoroughness is dazzling: Brenner even took pains to resolve confusion involving school names - changes, mergers, common usages - and provided a cross-reference in an appendix ("If you're looking for School [a], try School [b]..."). You can also test your knowledge with "Tournament Trivia:" Which school was the first women's collegiate national champion? Which tournament participant had the fewest wins in a season? It's a pricey tome at $98.50 (Amazon.com) but look at it this way: it effectively replaces a whole shelf of lesser reference works costing many times that. If you're a true lover of the game and its history, this is the one book you want to have. By the way, the first women's collegiate national champion was West Chester in 1969, in the invitational IAIW (page 1,027). Fewest wins in a season? Bay Ridge Christian in 1997, with zip.

Customer Review: A must-have for every official. READ IT ALL!
Book gives positioning for every conceivable offensive and defensive set a team might throw at you. It teaches transition movement, ball-passing movement, shot movement. It stresses that in order to be a good ref you MUST understand the game itself and be able to anticipate what's coming next. It teaches you to recognize offenseive sets (man-to-man and zone, and the nuances of each subsequent variation) and the proper positioning. Unbeleiveably thorough and easy to understand. Well written. For instance, it suggests you wear a white t-shirt under your stripes (as opposed to black, recommended by most associations) because it makes your stripes look brighter and cleaner! A subtle, subconscious advantage that goes to making you LOOK like a referee! BUY THIS BOOK AND BE A BETTER REFEREE!!! (When is the three-man version coming out?)

This is a book that I wrote and published about the basketball team at Rio Grande College in Ohio that I was coach of in the early fifties. This was a very small school that went on to win against large division one schools. On the team was one Bevo Francis that holds the one game scoring record of 113 points. ESPN is currently doing a documentary that will air in March on the team and Rio Grande College. Disney Films has also purchased the rights to make a film about the team but the date of filming has yet to be announced. I cuurently have four thousand copies of the book available and can print more if necessary.
